Putnam County is located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. It lies in the Piedmont region of the state, characterized by rolling hills, farms, and lakes. The county seat and largest city is Eatonton. Putnam County covers about 361 square miles, with 345 square miles of land and 16 square miles of water. It is situated approximately 75 miles southeast of Atlanta and is surrounded by Morgan County to the north, Greene County to the northeast, Hancock County to the east, Baldwin County to the southeast, Jones County to the southwest, and Jasper County to the west
