Stratified squamous epithelium is found in multiple locations in the body where protection against abrasion is necessary. It covers the entire skin (epidermis), parts of the tongue, mouth, pharynx, esophagus, vagina, and external female genitalia. Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium is present in the epidermis of the skin where it provides a waterproof barrier and protection from water loss and abrasion. Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium lines moist surfaces like the inside of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and vagina, where it provides protection but remains moist.
