Tambo is a small town located in Central West Queensland, Australia. It sits on the banks of the Barcoo River and is about 101 kilometers southeast of Blackall and approximately 862 kilometers northwest of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. The town is part of the Blackall-Tambo Region and is known for cattle farming and tourism. Tambo is the oldest town in western Queensland, established in 1863, and has a population of around 283 people as of 2021. The name "Tambo" comes from an Indigenous Australian word meaning "hidden place," "resting place," or "shady waters." The town lies along the Landsborough Highway, which connects Brisbane to Darwin.
