The Drake Passage is a body of water located between the southernmost tip of South America (Cape Horn in Chile) and the South Shetland Islands near Antarctica. It connects the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean with the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and extends into the Southern Ocean. The passage is about 600 miles (approximately 1,000 km) wide and is known as the shortest route from Antarctica to any other landmass. It is famous for its turbulent waters, strong currents, and large waves due to the unimpeded flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current through the passage.
