The fibula is a slender bone located on the outer (lateral) aspect of the lower leg, running parallel to the shinbone (tibia). It extends from just below the knee to the ankle, and its main roles are providing muscle attachment sites and contributing to ankle stability rather than bearing most of the body's weight. The upper end (proximal) connects near the knee, and the lower end (distal) forms part of the outer ankle, with the bony prominence known as the lateral malleolus.
