The fibula is the slender long bone on the outer (lateral) side of the leg. It runs parallel to the tibia, from just below the knee to the ankle, and does not bear body weight as a primary function. Its proximal (top) end forms the head near the knee, and its distal (bottom) end forms the lateral malleolus, which contributes to the structure of the outer ankle joint. The fibula is connected to the tibia by the interosseous membrane, forming a syndesmotic joint with limited mobility.
