The Rock of Gibraltar is a monolithic limestone mountain located in Gibraltar, a British overseas territory on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It stands 426 meters high and dominates the western entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. The Rock is situated near the end of a narrow 9-kilometer promontory stretching south into the Mediterranean, about 27 kilometers northeast of Tarifa, Spain. It is well known as a fortress and nature reserve, home to Barbary macaques, and is a major historic and tourist landmark in the region. The Rock of Gibraltar also marks the northern Pillar of Hercules at the Strait of Gibraltar, the gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
