The thyroid gland is located at the front of the neck, just below the Adam's apple (larynx). It is butterfly-shaped, consisting of two lobes on either side of the windpipe (trachea), connected by a narrow band called the isthmus
. The gland spans roughly the area between the C5 and T1 vertebrae and lies wrapped around the cricoid cartilage and upper rings of the trachea
. It is not usually visible or palpable from the outside under normal conditions
