Yap is a group of islands located in the western Pacific Ocean and is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. It lies just nine degrees north of the Equator and stretches across about 600 miles in the Pacific. Yap proper consists of four main volcanic islands—Rumung, Maap, Gagil-Tomil, and Yap itself—within a barrier reef. It is approximately 500 miles southwest of Guam, 300 miles northeast of Palau, and 950 miles east of Cebu in the Philippines. The capital of Yap State is Colonia, situated on the east coast of Yap Island. Yap is known for its distinctive culture, traditional stone money, and scenic volcanic and reef landscapes.
