The appendix is located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen, near the right hip bone. More specifically, it is attached to the beginning of the large intestine in an area called the cecum. The base of the appendix is typically about 2 cm beneath the ileocecal valve that separates the large intestine from the small intestine. The point on the surface of the abdomen corresponding to the appendix location is known as McBurney's point, which lies one-third of the way along a line between the anterior superior iliac spine (a point on the right hip bone) and the belly button. The appendix is a small tube-shaped pouch that can vary in exact position but is most commonly found in this lower right abdominal area.
