The fibula is the thinner bone on the outer (lateral) side of the lower leg, running parallel to the shinbone (tibia). It extends from just below the knee to the ankle and primarily serves as an attachment site for muscles and for stabilization of the ankle, rather than bearing most of the body's weight. The proximal end is the fibular head near the knee, and the distal end forms the outer ankle bump known as the lateral malleolus.
