Mary, the mother of Jesus, is traditionally believed to have lived primarily in Nazareth, a town in Galilee. She resided there in "her own house," possibly with her parents, during her betrothal to Joseph before the birth of Jesus
. After Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, the Holy Family returned to Nazareth, where they lived for a significant period
. Later traditions and some Christian beliefs hold that Mary lived her final years near Ephesus (in present-day Turkey) with the Apostle John, following Jesus' crucifixion. This site, known as the House of the Virgin Mary, is a modest stone house on Mount Koressos near Ephesus and has been a pilgrimage site since the 19th century. Although the authenticity of this site is debated, it has been recognized and visited by several popes and revered by both Christians and Muslims
. In summary:
- Early life and betrothal: Nazareth, Galilee
- Jesus' birth: Bethlehem (temporary stay)
- Post-birth residence: Nazareth
- Final years (traditionally): Near Ephesus, Turkey
There is also a tradition that Mary died in Jerusalem, but no direct biblical evidence confirms this
