Auschwitz was located in German-occupied Poland, near the town of Oświęcim (called Auschwitz in German), which is about 40 miles (64 km) west of Kraków. The Auschwitz camp complex included Auschwitz I (the main camp), Auschwitz II- Birkenau (the killing center near the village of Brzezinka), and Auschwitz III Monowitz near the village of Monowice. The entire complex was situated in the region annexed by Germany at the start of World War II. Auschwitz I was on the outskirts of Oświęcim, Auschwitz II about 2 miles (3 km) from Auschwitz I, and Auschwitz III about 4 miles (6.5 km) away from Auschwitz I.
