Billy the Kid was killed in Fort Sumner, New Mexico Territory, at the home (ranch house) of Pete Maxwell.
Location
Billy the Kid was shot by Sheriff Pat Garrett on the night of July 14, 1881, in Pete Maxwell’s house at Fort Sumner. Fort Sumner was then part of the New Mexico Territory and is now in De Baca County, New Mexico.
Burial place
He was buried the next day in the old military cemetery at Fort Sumner, between his companions Tom O’Folliard and Charlie Bowdre. Today his marked grave is a local historic site in Fort Sumner.
