Fawlty Towers was filmed primarily at BBC locations in London and surrounding studios, not in Torquay where the story is set. The exterior of the hotel was represented by a stand-in building near Wooburn Grange in Buckinghamshire, while most interior scenes were shot at the BBC Television Centre in Shepherd’s Bush, London. Additional exterior scenes were filmed at various real-world locations around England, including places in Cookham and Harrow, used to stand in for the Torquay hotel and its surroundings. The show draws its inspiration from the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, which inspired the fictional setting, but the actual filming took place mainly away from Torquay itself.
