Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, in the prison of his maternal uncle Kamsa, who was a tyrant king of Mathura. His parents were Vasudeva and Devaki, members of the Yadava clan. According to Hindu scriptures such as the Mahabharata, Harivamsa, and Krishna Charitas, Krishna's birth took place in Mathura, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of the Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar
. On the night of his birth, Vasudeva secretly carried the infant Krishna across the Yamuna River to the nearby region of Vraja (Vrindavan), where Krishna was raised by Nanda and his wife Yashoda to protect him from Kamsa, who sought to kill him
. Thus, Krishna's birthplace is specifically the prison in Mathura where Devaki and Vasudeva were confined, and his early upbringing took place in the Mathura-Vrindavan region by the banks of the Yamuna River
