The Deer Hunter was filmed in multiple locations, primarily in the United States and Thailand. Most of the filming took place in Cleveland, Ohio, with notable locations including St. Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral and Lemko Hall. Other Ohio locations include Loraine, Mingo Junction, Steubenville, Struthers, and Cleveland's U.S. Steel Central Furnaces. The deer hunting scenes were filmed in the Mount Baker area of Washington State. The Vietnam scenes were filmed in Thailand, including Bangkok (standing in for Saigon) and the River Kwai, where the prison camp and Russian roulette scenes were shot. The film also used locations in Pennsylvania and West Virginia to represent the fictional town of Clairton, Pennsylvania.
