The first Christian church was located in Jerusalem. It was established immediately after the Ascension of Jesus Christ around 33 AD. According to the Acts of the Apostles, the early Christian community began in Jerusalem, where the apostles gathered and the Holy Spirit empowered them at Pentecost, marking the formal start of the church. This original Christian community was composed mostly of Jewish believers and was known as the initial Christian church or "assembly" (ekklesia).
In terms of the first known church buildings, the Cenacle (the site of the Last Supper in Jerusalem) is often considered the first Christian church, and the Dura-Europos church in Syria is the oldest surviving church building known.
