The movie uses more than one “real” hotel, depending on what you mean.
Main filming location
For Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, the exterior of the Overlook Hotel was filmed at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon, USA. The lodge’s façade is what you see in the establishing shots of the snowbound hotel.
Inspiration for the book
Stephen King’s original inspiration for the Overlook Hotel came from The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, where he stayed in the 1970s and imagined the story. This Colorado hotel now leans into the connection and offers Shining‑themed tours.
Interior design basis
The film’s interior hotel sets were built in a studio in England and were heavily based on the design of the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, California. So the hallways, lobby, and other indoor spaces are mainly reproductions, not real hotel interiors.
