The Innocence Project was established in 1992 by Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, which is part of Yeshiva University in New York City
. It began as a law clinic focused on using DNA testing to exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals and later became an independent nonprofit organization.
