The lost city of gold, known as El Dorado, was supposedly located somewhere in South America. The legend originated from the Muisca people in what is now Colombia, where a tribal chief was said to cover himself in gold dust and make offerings of gold into Lake Guatavita near present-day Bogotá. Over time, explorers sought El Dorado in various locations across northern South America, including regions in Colombia, Venezuela (around the mythical Lake Parime), Guyana, and northern Brazil. Despite many expeditions, the exact location or existence of a city of gold has never been verified, and it is mostly regarded as a myth or a combination of several myths linked to the region's rich gold artifacts and indigenous ceremonies.
