The Rosetta Stone was found near Rashid, also known as Rosetta, a town in the Nile Delta of Egypt. It was uncovered on July 15, 1799 during Napoleon Bonaparte’s campaign in Egypt, while French soldiers were building fortifications at Fort Julien (the old Rashid fort) on the left bank of the Nile. The stone dates to 196 BCE and is inscribed in three scripts: Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphic, which ultimately enabled scholars to decipher hieroglyphs for the first time in centuries.
