The 1980 film “The Shining” is set at the fictional Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies, but it was not actually filmed there.
Main filming locations
Most of the interior hotel scenes were built and shot on soundstages at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England. These sets included key areas like the Colorado Lounge, the Gold Room, corridors, and the hedge maze courtyard.
The exterior of the Overlook Hotel is the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon, which appears in the establishing and wide exterior shots. The famous opening drive through the mountains was filmed along Going‑to‑the‑Sun Road and around Saint Mary Lake in Glacier National Park, Montana.
Additional brief location work used real spots in Colorado for the Torrance family’s Boulder apartment exterior, plus airport and hospital locations in the U.K. for smaller scenes.
