Volleyball was first played in 1895 at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. It was invented by William G. Morgan, who created the game as a less physically demanding alternative to basketball. Initially, the game was called "mintonette" before being renamed volleyball after a demonstration game where a spectator commented that players were volleying the ball back and forth over the net. The first official game under the name volleyball was played at Springfield College in Massachusetts in 1896.
