Volleyball was invented in 1895 in a YMCA gymnasium in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. It was created by William G. Morgan, who was a physical education director at the YMCA. Initially, the game was called "Mintonette" before being renamed volleyball after a spectator noted the volleying motion of the ball over the net.
