The movie What About Bob? was primarily filmed in and around Moneta, Virginia, located on Smith Mountain Lake. The town of Moneta was used to represent the fictional town of Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. Key scenes, such as Bob arriving in town on the bus and the house explosion, were shot there, with the explosion scene using a 3/4-sized model replica of the house detonated on a nearby lot. The local Elks National Home in Bedford, Virginia, was used as the mental institution in the film. Some scenes were also filmed in New York City.
