Chocolate chip cookies were invented in 1938 by Ruth Graves Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth Wakefield, a skilled baker and entrepreneur, created the cookie by adding chopped pieces of Nestlé chocolate into her cookie dough. The chocolate chunks did not melt completely, resulting in the now-iconic chocolate chip cookie. This invention was either a happy accident or a product of deliberate experimentation, but it quickly became popular and was called the Toll House cookie after the inn where it was created.
