Monarch butterflies overwinter in central Mexico, primarily in the States of Michoacán and México (the State of Mexico), where they gather in oyamel fir forests inside the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Many migrate further into Michoacán’s sanctuary towns such as El Rosario and Sierra de Valle de Bravo areas as they arrive from the United States and Canada, staying November through February to December before beginning their northward return in spring. The two Mexican states that receive the bulk of these overwintering monarchs are Michoacán and México (State of Mexico).
