The comic book character Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. Bob Kane initially conceived the character in 1939, but Bill Finger made significant contributions in developing Batman's iconic look and persona, including the cowl, cape, gloves, and the gray-and-black color scheme. Finger also came up with Batman's civilian identity, Bruce Wayne, and wrote many of the early stories. Although Bob Kane originally received sole credit for Batman's creation, Bill Finger's co-creator status was officially recognized by DC Comics starting in 2015. Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939.
