The Foot Locker brand was launched in 1974 by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was started as a specialty athletic retail division of Woolworth, with the first Foot Locker store opening in the Puente Hills Mall in City of Industry, California. The F. W. Woolworth Company had purchased the Kinney Shoe Corporation in 1963, and Foot Locker emerged as a division under Woolworth's ownership.
