The Foot Locker brand was launched in 1974 by The F.W. Woolworth Company. The company had purchased Kinney Shoe Corporation in 1963, and Kinney's shoe division opened the first Foot Locker stores in California in 1974. Later on, the company changed its name to Foot Locker, Inc. in 2001 to reflect the success of the Foot Locker brand.
