Countries that have implemented digital ID systems include Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Estonia, Singapore, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, India, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Canada, Pakistan, Brazil, Vietnam, the Philippines, Peru, and others. These digital IDs often come in the form of mobile apps linked to physical IDs or fully digital national ID cards and are used for accessing government services, banking, healthcare, digital signing, and various online transactions. For example, Estonia has a well-known long-standing e-ID system, Singapore offers the Singpass system, and China recently launched an online identity authentication public service. Costa Rica introduced a digital ID card in 2025, and Denmark uses MitID for public services and banking. Many of these systems comply with regional regulations such as the EU’s eIDAS for cross-border recognition, and some use biometric data and multi-factor authentication to enhance security.
