The expression “Black Friday” in the retail sense began in Philadelphia, where police in the 1950s–60s used it to describe the heavy traffic and crowded streets the day after Thanksgiving. From there, the term and the post‑Thanksgiving shopping tradition spread across the rest of the United States and later to many other countries.
