You place the candles in one direction, and you light them in the opposite direction. The key rule: always light the newest candle first.
Placing the candles
Candles are placed in the menorah from right to left as you face it, adding one more each night to the left of the previous night’s candle.
Lighting the candles
They are lit from left to right, using the shamash (helper candle), so you always start with the newest candle on the far left and then move toward the right.
