The First Lady who taught her husband how to read was Eliza McCardle Johnson, wife of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States. Andrew Johnson had very little formal education and was barely literate when they married. Eliza, who had received a decent education at Rhea Academy, taught him reading, writing, and arithmetic during their early years of marriage while he worked as a tailor. She read to him and helped him improve his literacy and numeracy skills, enabling him to succeed in business and politics. This educational support was crucial to his later political career, including his presidency from 1865 to 1869
