The horse that won the 2025 Kentucky Derby was Sovereignty. Sovereignty, a three-year-old colt, won the 151st Kentucky Derby on May 3, 2025, at Churchill Downs with a time of 2:02.3 on a rain-soaked, muddy track. The victory was the first Kentucky Derby win for jockey Junior Alvarado and the second for trainer Bill Mott. Sovereignty finished ahead of the favorite, Journalism, by 1.5 lengths in a field of 19 horses. Sovereignty was listed with odds around 7-9 to 1 at post time and took home $3.1 million from the $5 million purse.
