NBA 2K3 was the first game in the series to feature Yao Ming, although he was added through an official downloadable roster update during the 2002-03 NBA season rather than appearing on the original disc roster.
Yao was selected by the Houston Rockets with the first pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, and his arrival made him one of the most recognizable new players in the league. NBA 2K3 initially predates his NBA debut, so his inclusion came later through Sega’s online roster updates. Because Yao was added as downloadable content, his NBA 2K3 version had several limitations:
- He reportedly had no dedicated player portrait.
- Commentary and the public-address announcer referred to him by his jersey number.
- His in-game appearance was much rougher than his later digital models.
For many players, NBA 2K4 is the first version they remember seeing Yao Ming in because he was included more normally in the game’s standard roster and received a more recognizable presentation. That’s why some lists cite NBA 2K4, while the earliest documented appearance is NBA 2K3 through its roster update. A later retrospective also identifies NBA 2K4 as the starting point commonly shown in Yao’s regular 2K progression videos, but that doesn’t account for the NBA 2K3 update.
Short answer: NBA 2K3, via an official roster update. NBA 2K4 was his first more complete, standard appearance.
