Theodore Roosevelt had a pet hyena named Bill. Bill was a gift to President Roosevelt from Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia in 1904. Although Roosevelt initially thought hyenas were cowardly, he eventually grew fond of Bill, feeding him table scraps and teaching him tricks. Bill lived in the White House for a time before being moved to the National Zoo to live out his days.
