The prison that was demolished in 1987 is Spandau Prison in West Berlin, Germany. It was demolished soon after the death of its last prisoner, Rudolf Hess, in August 1987. The demolition was carried out to prevent the prison from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine. The site where the prison once stood was replaced by a shopping center for the British forces stationed in Germany, named the Britannia Centre Spandau. All materials from the demolished prison were ground to powder and dispersed in the North Sea or buried at a former RAF airbase, with the exception of one set of keys preserved in a museum.
