A student who is homeless is automatically eligible for Title I services under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. These services include immediate enrollment, transportation to school of origin if requested, free school meals, tutoring and academic assistance, and access to preschool services. Homeless students also have the right to attend either the school of origin or the local school where they are temporarily residing without the usual documentation requirements. School districts are required to reserve a portion of Title I funds specifically to support homeless students and must provide them with a written statement of their rights.
