You place the candles in one direction, but you light them in the opposite direction.

Facing the menorah, place the candles from right to left, adding a new candle to the left each night of Hanukkah.
Candle lighting
When lighting, always light the newest candle first, so you start with the left‑most candle and then move to the right.
