The first tower to fall was the South Tower (WTC 2). It collapsed at 9:59 a.m. after being hit by United Airlines Flight 175 at 9:03 a.m. The North Tower (WTC 1), which was hit earlier at 8:46 a.m. by American Airlines Flight 11, collapsed later at 10:28 a.m. after burning for about 1 hour and 42 minutes. So, even though the North Tower was hit first, the South Tower was the first to collapse on the morning of September 11, 2001.
