In Greek mythology, the Titans were the older generation of gods who ruled the cosmos before Zeus and the Olympian gods. They were the twelve children of Uranus, the sky, and Gaia, the Earth.

The twelve Titans

The six male Titans were:

  • Oceanus, associated with the great encircling ocean.
  • Coeus, linked with intellect and the celestial axis.
  • Crius, a comparatively obscure Titan connected with the constellations.
  • Hyperion, associated with heavenly light.
  • Iapetus, often connected with mortality and the human condition.
  • Cronus, the youngest and leader of the Titans.

The six female Titans, often called Titanesses, were Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe and Tethys. Their roles included sight, motherhood, divine law, memory, prophecy and the waters.

How the Titans ruled

Cronus led a rebellion against Uranus and helped the Titans take control of the universe. Their reign represented an earlier divine order, before the Olympians became the dominant gods in Greek myth. Cronus later married his sister Rhea. Their children included Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon and Zeus, who would become the central Olympian gods.

The Titanomachy

Cronus feared a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, so he swallowed each child at birth. Rhea saved Zeus by hiding him and giving Cronus a stone wrapped in cloth instead. When Zeus grew older, he forced Cronus to release his brothers and sisters. Zeus and the Olympians then fought the Titans in a major ten-year conflict known as the Titanomachy. The Olympians eventually won, took control of Mount Olympus and became the leading gods.

Not every Titan was portrayed as an enemy of Zeus. Oceanus, Prometheus and some others occupy more complicated roles in different myths. Prometheus, for example, is traditionally described as a Titan who helped humanity and opposed Zeus’s harsh treatment of mortals.

Titans in modern culture

Today, “Titan” generally means someone or something exceptionally powerful, influential or large. The word also appears in modern comics, films, games and sports. In DC Comics, the Titans are a superhero team that includes characters such as Robin, Raven, Starfire and Beast Boy.

The mythological Titans remain important because their stories explore familiar themes: rebellion against authority, fear of being replaced and conflict between generations.
