Personal Independence Payment (PIP) can be received by individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Be aged 16 or over and under State Pension age (if over State Pension age, Attendance Allowance may be applicable instead).
  • Have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability.
  • Have difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around.
  • Expect these difficulties to last for at least 12 months from when they started.
  • Usually have lived in England, Scotland, or Wales for at least 2 of the last 3 years and be living there when applying.
  • Not be subject to immigration control (with exceptions such as sponsored immigrants).
  • Have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme if from the EU or certain other countries.
  • You can get PIP whether you are working or have savings, and it is not affected by income or savings.

There are special considerations if you are nearing the end of life or if you have recently returned from living abroad. You can still get PIP if you live abroad in some cases, such as within the EU or if you work in the Armed Forces or are a family member of someone who does. PIP is intended to help with extra care or mobility needs caused by disability or health condition.
