USAA membership is primarily available to individuals connected to the U.S. military. Eligible members include:
- Active-duty military personnel from all branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force).
- National Guard and Reserve members , whether currently serving or previously served.
- Veterans who have honorably served in any branch of the U.S. military.
- Pre-commissioned officers and cadets , including ROTC participants, academy students, warrant officers, and midshipmen
Family members of eligible military members can also join USAA, including:
- Spouses of military members or veterans.
- Children and stepchildren of USAA members.
- Unremarried former spouses who joined USAA while married to a military member.
- Grandchildren if both their parents and grandparents were USAA members
USAA membership cannot be obtained solely through a parent or grandparent who was in the military unless they were USAA members themselves. Also, parents and siblings of military members are not eligible unless they qualify through their own military service or family connection to a USAA member
