The Inca Empire was conquered by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. In 1532, Pizarro and about 168 Spanish soldiers overthrew the Inca leader Atahualpa and took control of the empire, which was then one of the largest in the world. This conquest marked the end of the Inca Empire and led to the establishment of Spanish colonial rule in the region, including the founding of the city of Lima in 1535. Pizarro's conquest was aided by the political instability within the empire, advanced weaponry, and strategic tactics despite the numerical superiority of the Inca forces.
