Guinness beer was created by Arthur Guinness, an Irish brewer and entrepreneur. He founded the Guinness Brewery at St. James's Gate in Dublin in 1759. Arthur Guinness originally brewed ale but began producing porter (a type of dark beer) in 1778, which eventually became the sole focus of the brewery by 1799. He famously signed a 9,000-year lease for the brewery site at St. James's Gate, which helped establish the legacy of Guinness beer.
