Hamas was created by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a Palestinian Islamic scholar and activist affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. It was founded in December 1987 during the First Intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation, as the political and militant arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Gaza. The group's purpose was to resist Israeli occupation and promote an Islamic society in historic Palestine. Initially, Hamas engaged in violence against Israelis and gained support as a nationalist and Islamist resistance movement.
