who created kirby

Kirby was created by Masahiro Sakurai. He conceived the character around May 1990 while working at HAL Laboratory, and Kirby first appeared as the player character in the 1992 Game Boy video game Kirby's Dream Land. Originally designed as a simple placeholder graphic, the character's cute and simple appearance was kept, and he evolved into one of Nintendo's iconic video game characters. The name "Kirby" was chosen by Nintendo of America, partly in honor of John Kirby, a lawyer who defended Nintendo in a legal case. Sakurai is also known for creating the Super Smash Bros. series and has worked on other games like Kid Icarus: Uprising.
