Marvel Comics was originally founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman as Timely Comics. The modern Marvel era, however, is most famously credited to Stan Lee, who along with artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, co-created many iconic Marvel superhero characters in the 1960s. Stan Lee was the primary creative leader who transformed Marvel from a small publishing house division into a major multimedia corporation. He co-created famous characters including Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, and many others, pioneering a more naturalistic approach to superheroes. While Martin Goodman founded the company, Stan Lee, along with co-creators like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, were central to creating the Marvel Universe as it is known today.
